What is a Surge Protection System?

GNH installs surge protectors, surge protection device (SPD), in the main panel of your electric box. This is the root of your home’s electrical system. This is where the root of a power surge problem starts and finishes your system.

By installing a system to defend against risky storm surges, it eliminates electrical loss from the root so as it does not have the chance to enter your home easily. There are four types of surge protectors: type 1, type 2, type 3, and type 4 consumers should be aware of to shield their homes or businesses.
  • Type 1 is also known as service entrance surge protectors and it is the most durable of all the surge protectors. This surge protector defends against destructive surges and has the biggest surge capacity than any other surge protector types. However, it is the most expensive.
  • Type 2 is also called whole home surge protectors. This type can be used to safeguard all the circuits in your home or just a single circuit. It defends against both big and small surges.
  • Type 3 is recognized as receptacle surge protectors or its common form factor, the power strip. This is the most affordable and easily installed. This type allows to defend multiple devices and shares one outlet with many devices simultaneously.
  • Type 4 is combinations of the different types described above. An example is type 12 which provides the benefits of type 1 and type 2. This is usually a more affordable option than if you had to buy two independent type 1 and type 2 devices.

Homes Need Surge Protection Now More than Ever

A lot has changed in the digital world in the past years. Families and businesses are becoming more and more dependent on technology and their storage capabilities. A sudden surge could delete precious memories on a family computer, important documents on a hard drive, or worse. This can be especially important if your house is an older house and cannot handle the amperage as newer built homes. Thus, for older built homes make sure you update your electrical system such as by installing surge protectors.

Small Surges Add Up

Many believe if they have never had a surge at their house before, they are immune. Even more believe that surges only come from storms with lightning. Did you know that 80% of surges in a home we generate ourselves? Generators and motors like those in ac units, HVAC systems, washing machines, etc. welcome small surges into the home’s electrical lines. It’s uncommon to have lots of large surges that create a total wipe out, but the small surges day to day add up to affect your system in a detrimental way, degrading the performance of electronics and cut short lifespans.
